Préface de Michel Poivert (extrait)

« The play of allusions, such as the high angle shoots of the Bauhaus in Dessau, often features in Brigitte Bauer’s work too. Take the example of the seascape with two birds in flight cutting across the sky, recalling Gerhard Richter’s so-called photographic painting celebrating Romanticism. But icons such as this are not the only points to mark this itinerary. Sometimes the work acquires a certain rhythm thanks to allusive stereotypes : architectural forms, picturesque or banal, or modest interiors lit up by their « unconscious arrangements », to take up Walker Evans’ phrase ; but this is never done systematically, as with Bernd and Hilla Becher and their pupils. Precisely because in this case the intellectual demands of distance are tempered by the shortcut of feeling. A facade, an object, the innermost corner of an attic with its toys stuffed away under a plastic cover, are the result of an anthropologist’s gaze on a vernacular culture just as much as they are the expression of certain feelings. »
